i’m josey “real last name” baker, a funny little fellow who fell in love with baking bread in the spring of 2010. i grew up in vermont, but now i live in san francisco and bake bread for the people.

baking bread makes me feel good, and i love kids:

hmmm… nice.. but if only you could mind your language! does baking good bread have a co-relation to using bad language???

  7. Bonnie Matteson says:

Wow!! I didn’t detect any bad language. Where did that come from?

  8. linda van der Merwe says:

Love your passion for baking beautiful, healthy for mind/body/soul breads and LOVE your edgy language, do not change anything.

Congrats on the nice write-up in last weekend’s WSJ…
(my 94-yo dad read it to me — I live a few blocks away on Divis. and was not aware of your bread — now I’m on my way to buy a loaf for both of us!)

    Hi Josey!

My name is Jenny, I live in the South Bay and came across your site via Instagram. Reading the short background about you, I’m utterly impressed. Looks like you started baking bread in 2010 and now runs a store?!! Wow! Impressive. I went to culinary, well pastry school in 2010 and have not even ventured into bread. I love, love, love bread though. Thinking of signing up for the bread course at SFBI. Appreciate your thoughts or pointers for best approach towards learning bread baking. We’re you self-taught? Did you bake from home to practice or were you working for bakery? Would love to hear more about your journey.
    Merci!

    Best,
    Jen

    • yo jen!! thanks for sayin hey. yup, things moved pretty quickly, but that’s in part because i just totally fell in love/became obsessed with bread. i started baking at home one day and just didn’t stop, and talked with anybody and everybody i could about it, visited lots of bakeries, read as much as i could find in books and on the internet. practice is the best teacher, so if ya wanna make better bread, do it more.
      thanks again for reaching out,
      j

another sourdough and in general baking obsessed soul, far across the planet, doing obsessive baking frenzies every now and then and selling small scale in the community where i live. if i would live closer, i’d apply for a job!

  14. Wow, so glad to see your success! I used to see you performing at the Hotel Utah back in the day, and I actually still listen to your album I got from you there. Just heard your voice on This American Life, and I was like, “Hey, I know that guy!” Best of luck to you!

    • hey thanks amanda! ahhhh, the hotel utah days! feels like a lifetime ago. i did in fact break out the guitar for the first time in years to play a few songs at a local bar – my cover of 4 Non Blondes’ ‘what’s up’ was far and away the crowd fav. thanks for writing!

  15. What a brave picture of yourself! It made me laugh out loud…in a “gee, I wish I were that bold, too” kind of way! 🙂

  16. What a great “excuse” to return to SF for a visit!! (I was also going to say “nice buns” but I see that’s already been acknowledged)… 😉
